Laura Stevens

From her "exiled" project.

wednesday

I've been really stressed out for a few weeks now, because my uni project kind of fell through. I got permission to shoot it, but it's not going to happen until early spring which is not good at all and I don't have clue I'm going to do next.
Today I felt like I needed to get out of my parents house and just do something, so I went to our grandparents house to take a few photos.
My grandfather has passed away and my grandmother is now living in a nursing home and I don't know what's going to happen with their apartment. It felt really weird to go inside, almost like time had stopped inside.

Since my grandfather passed away almost 5 years ago, my grandmother had two phones in the house, just in case if she fell down, so there would be a phone close by to call help with. This phone was still in the same place where it has been for years now.

This radio brings back memories from my grandparents old house, where I used to live when I was born 30 years ago. I remember my grandmother listening to this radio and smoking cigarettes in the kitchen when I was a kid.

Photograph of my mother (left) and her sister (right) when they graduated at the age of 18 or 19. My mother was pregnant when this photograph was taken.

I think I'm going back tomorrow as well and take some more photographs. Could even make this into a personal project. I just hope there's enough light tomorrow, because I don't want to use a tripod again.

friday

Been in Finland for the last two weeks now for christmas and I have to say it's been too cold to do anything (almost -30 celsius every day) outside, which means I haven't even began working on my new uni project. Good times... But I do have another two weeks to shoot a project, if I can only figure out what it's going to be, hah!
Anyways, I got pretty bored of sitting at home and watching re-runs on tv, so I decided to book a studio for a day from jopka and since I'm a member I get it for 5 euro a day. sweet deal I think. The studio was okay, maybe a bit too low to shoot full body portraits and two lights didn't work as well, but I can't really complain at all. It was only 5 euro after all..
I haven't been shooting in a studio for ages and decided to shoot some portraits of my mate Eetu.
The lighting is far from perfect, but I still I kind of liked this one. It was really nice to shoot in a studio, I'm definitely going to start shooting more again. Shot this with my canon 5d and 85mm f/1.8 lens, ISO 100, 1/125 f/8.
I also shot some 4x5 portraits as well with my Graflex, since I got a custom made sync cable made for it from US, so I can use my Elinchrom skyports with it . The polaroids looked sweet, so I hope they come out good.
Got the studio again for next tuesday. I'm shooting portraits for a band called ROE, can't wait!

Magnum In Motion

Some might already know this, but I thought I'd upload it anyways.
I'm going back home (Finland) today and I wanted to get some entertainment for the trip, so I subscribed to Magnum In Motion podcast. It's free and there's lots of good essays.
Hopefully the battery on my Iphone will last the whole trip back home...
